The good news is that unless the plants are completely dead, they can usually be revived.

Begin by clipping off dead flowers and browning leaves. See! It looks better already. Now cut back yellowing stems and stems with a good many yellowing leaves to encourage the plant to send out new shoots. If your plant has trailing stems, you may have to detangle the stems first to determine which are worth keeping.

If you're like me, you may find it hard to clip off buds that will be opening soon, so use your own judgment to determine if this is necessary. A plant with a lot of damage will have more trouble recovering if it's trying to support buds during the recovery period, and the buds may eventually fall off without opening anyway. If the damage is mild, leave the buds that are on undamaged stems in place.

Watering a dried out basket can be difficult. You may find that as you pour water into the basket it simply runs out without wetting the soil. The best way to overcome this is to run a pan of tepid water, and add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid. The dishwashing liquid acts as a wetting agent and allows the water to soak into the soil. Set your plant inside the pan of water and leave it for at least an hour, or until the basket is saturated, and mist the plants a time or two while they soak. If there are heavy chains or ropes attached to your basket, support them with a stick so that they don't lay on top of your plants. When the plants are dry, it doesn't take much weight to break the stems and leaves.

At this point we want to do everything we can to help our plants get back on their feet, but it's best to avoid feeding them for about five days. This gives them time to overcome the shock before trying to send out new shoots.

Watch your recovering plants closely for signs of insects or disease. In their weakened state, they are more susceptible to pests and fungus, and they should be treated right away if you suspect a problem. Before you know it, your basket will be bursting with blooms again.

Terri

Penny's Tomatoes Trivia Contest with Freebies for winners.

Here is a tomatoe quiz, enjoy!!! Trivia .: "
1. Even though winter
may still have a few tricks up its sleeve, vegetable gardeners
can begin to prepare for the gardening season and get a head
start on spring by starting some crops early indoors.

But if seeds are started indoors too soon, the little plants
may outgrow their indoor growing space and become too leggy.
If they're planted too late, the seedlings will not be large
enough for transplanting in the garden when planting time
comes round. For the best results and the least amount of
frustration, it's important to know the right time to plant
seeds.

Broccoli and cabbage can be started early indoors or direct
seeded. The proper time for planting seeds for broccoli or
cabbage indoors would be four to six weeks before
transplanting to the garden.

The timing for planting cauliflower seeds is similar to the
timing for broccoli. Sow the seeds in flats starting in
early March. For successive crops, continue sowing seeds
through June, and plant out the seedlings 4-5 weeks after
sowing the seeds.

Cucumbers can be started early indoors or direct seeded in
the garden. For an earlier crop, sow cucumber seeds indoors
4-5 weeks before they can be planted outdoors.

Melon plants grow best in warm weather. Melon seeds can be
sown indoors one month before they can be transplanted into
the garden. Handle seedlings carefully as they do not like
to have their roots disturbed.

Onions are often grown from tiny bulbs called sets, but
onions can also be grown from seed. Plant onion seeds
indoors in flats 6-8 weeks before they seedlings are to be
planted out. Or plant onion seeds directly in the garden as
soon as the soil can be worked.

Peppers grow rather slowly and in most climates the plants
should be started indoors. Sow pepper seeds indoors eight
weeks before planting out the little seedlings, and do not
plant them outdoors until the soil has warmed and summer
weather has settled in.

Pumpkins and winter squash are vigorous plants that grow well
when the seeds are planted directly in the garden. If you
have a short growing season, you may start pumpkin winter
squash seeds indoors no more than 3-4 weeks before planting
out the seedlings.

Tomato plants cannot handle cool temperatures or frost, so
the seedlings must not be planted outdoors until all danger
of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 70
degrees. Sow tomato seeds indoors 5-6 weeks before the
seedlings can be planted out.

Hope you enjoyed it...
Terri

The geraniums I dug last fall, and kept in greenhouse, now ready to take cuttings....

<img style="cursor:pointer; For what you see here, I used a four feet pipe. The pipe/dowel has to fit through the hole in the bottom of the pots but be strong enough to support all the pots.

-any pots or outdoor-friendly containers with holes in the bottom. The hole doesn't have to be in the middle of the container but needs to be wide enough to fit the pipe/dowel through. I used my clay pots but think of the possibilities: old aluminum teapots, coffee pots, kettles, cooking pots....Anything you can drill a hole in if it doesn't have one already. My DH made ducting out of plywood and it is wonderful(see above pics). All automatic. Planted tomatoes, Peppers, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kohlrabi and red and peach poppies...

the petunias, geraniums, and rest come next week.

tis good to get the nails dirty and feel the earth under them, they are washable, the sun has been wonderful...our snow is GONE!!!!

Outside I go....where does the garbage come from, under the snow, I think it grows....

Love to you all....

Terri

Cleaned up the tomatoe and pepper spot in the garden, tore up all of the old black mulch and drip(which was plugged), and am laying all new for this year, plus, extending it 12 more feet. My DD helped me plant and is welcoming the next planting, she says she LOVES to plant....great, I can then enjoy the GrandSweeties too....they painted(with markers, flourescent, highlighters) all of the boards in the Greenhouse, so(the 4 year old says), it wont be sooo plain.....they played in the soil and moved it all over...in the pots, what big helps, they filled more pots than I did I think!

the Marigold Seed giveaway is over, but, if you need to and are from MJs farm, please privately email me, from my email on MJs farm.

Happy Gardening!!!

Days of beginning the Greenhouse and thoughts....

            OH My!~!~!~!~!~!~~!

The days just fly past, and where have they gone?

Finally received all of my seeds, from my seed suppliers. Went to the "peat" place yesterday..nice stuff. There is a place in the mountains, that use to be a lake and now has dried up, it has wonderful peat.....I am going to use that for the basis of my seed starting mix. Plus, pearlite....

My Dh has installed the "furnace" and it is working VERY well.... Will start next week, hope it's not too late, but, cannot be helped this year. Everyone says, that even if ones plants are small, here when set out in April or early May, once the heat hits(in the 100's), they will catch up to the rest. We also, sectioned off 2/3 of the greenhouse, so there are nice doors to walk through and walls, instead of plastic....looks better. Now to get to all of the junk beyond the doors..argh....

Becasue I am selling to the public this year and people have requested certain types of veggies... I think I must have 60 or so kinds of heirloom and non heirloom tomatoes, also the same amount for peppers. I am going to make my Tom/Pepper patch twice as big. We have always had the water in drip under the plastic mulch, but, am going to experiment this year with different things. They seem to do soooo well, for me,so, I am cutting down on everything else. I get $2.25 per pound at the market for them. (of course, with the economy the way it is, we will see.) But, at least with veggies, one can always eat them.....!

I am going to plant Marigolds in the rows and all around the Garden again this year, did that last year, and what a difference in the bugs, not many...I spray organic and fertilize with the same.

If your using the same pots this year to plant in, be sure to wash or at least soak them, in a solution of bleach and water(2 T to 1 gal. water)...this kills anything that may be lurking to destroy your seeds or seelings.

Summer, its on its way, on the bottom(last year)..... the picture on the top, is in fall(as well as the bottom of this post)..but, just wanted you to see the "hedge" of Marigolds even in fall.....

This has been fun, I have received several SASE's for the seeds, am sending them out....

I hope all enjoy them, you will have enough for the rest of your gardening days, as you save from year to year.

Marigolds are not fussy about the soil they are in, they likie water though...from my experience, they really dont need much fertilizer, if any, and my tall ones get up to 38 inches tall, with some blossoms as big as 4 inches across.......

they make wonderful "living" fences...I use them for a border around my garden to keep "pets and Grandsweeties", from thinking the garden is to play in.

They are al WONDERFUL bu repellent, planted IN my potatoe patch, they repel all kinds of nasty bugs that love my potatoes. The Colorado Potatoe Beetle seems to be th sorst here, and last year werenot too bad, dont really know if it is because of the Marigolds planted n and amongst the plants or just because it was a small year for them, but, at any rate, there were few. So, I will plant the Marigolds in the potatoes and everywhere else again this year.

I pick the largest and prettiest heads inthe summer after they are just about bone dry(I leave them whole and break apart AFTER they are dry)....put them in small paper lunch sacks and put them in my greenhouse(its hot in there and htey dry wel...), if not, put them up on top of your refrigerator, in PAPER, never plastic, they will rot, or laying on something paper....this absorbs the moisture and allows the air to dry it.

Label them as to color(at the time you pick them, if your anything like me, by the time I remember to label, I have forgotten(grin)and height....that is why I use small paper lunch sacks....

I store mine in 5 gallon buckets, with lids, the mice in the winter love to eat them, when stored in my Greenhouse.

Next spring, as soon as you have the last frost, I use a hoe to run a small furrow along the sides and front and back of my garden, and sprinkle a few seeds in(before this, break apart the heads), cover, water and wait for about 10 to 12 days, you will see small, almost "Palm Tree" looking sticks with jagged looking leaves on them, sit back and enjoy them................

they really are easy and fun, PLEASE share with all of those around, make them your "Friendship"
